Tape measures can be bulky and inconvenient to carry around in your everyday carry (EDC) kit. However, the new titanium Tiroler ring aims to solve that problem by integrating a measuring tool into a sleek and portable design.
The Tiroler ring, currently being funded on Kickstarter, is designed with a unique rolling mechanism. As you hold the outside of the ring, the inside wheel remains free to spin. By rolling the ring along a surface, the central wheel, which is marked with either an imperial or metric scale, turns.
The measurements are then displayed through a small window in the outer ring. To keep track of the distance rolled, the Tiroler produces a satisfying click with each complete revolution. In the metric version, a click is delivered every 10 cm, while the imperial version clicks after every five inches rolled.
For instance, if you were using the imperial version and heard six clicks with the number three displayed in the window, it would indicate that the edge being measured is 33 inches long. This innovative design allows for limitless measuring ability in a compact form factor, as long as you can mentally keep track of the clicks.
The Tiroler excels at measuring oddly shaped objects, such as seat cushions or round bowls, thanks to its rolling design. Additionally, it eliminates the need to struggle with sharp and bendy metal strips commonly found in traditional tape measures.
Not only is the Tiroler functional, but it also boasts a sleek design that can double as a fashionable necklace. If wearing it around your neck isn’t your style, it also comes with a small leather carrying pouch that can be clipped onto your keyring.
The Kickstarter campaign for the Tiroler has been a resounding success, raising over US$143,000, surpassing its initial goal of $3,343. With 11 days remaining in the campaign, there are still a few early-bird pledges available. The metric version can be obtained for ¥8,650 (about $58), while the imperial model is priced at ¥10,300 (about $69).
While it’s important to note the usual cautions associated with crowdfunded projects, the Tiroler has already gained enough funding to proceed with production. If everything goes according to plan, the creators anticipate shipping the Tiroler starting in mid-December.
Say goodbye to bulky tape measures and hello to the convenience of the Tiroler titanium ring. With its ingenious rolling design and compact size, it’s set to revolutionize measuring on the go.
