Safer Prescribing: Study Shows Plan is Key in Helping Patients Manage Pain

Posted on January 16, 2024January 16, 2024 by Anuja Desai

In a bid to improve prescribing safety and reduce the risk of drug overdose, a recent study published in Nature Communications suggests that providing physicians with a plan for helping patients in pain can significantly impact their prescribing practices. The study found that physicians who received notifications about a patient’s fatal drug overdose, along with a plan for subsequent patient visits, were more cautious in prescribing controlled substances. The results showed a reduction of nearly 13% in prescriptions of opioids and more than 8% in prescriptions of benzodiazepines, which are the main contributors to prescription drug overdoses.

The key element in these notifications was the inclusion of if/when planning prompts, which provided guidance for physicians during patient visits. The prompts urged doctors to have recommendations on hand to ensure safe care for patients presenting with pain. It also encouraged them to voice their concerns about prescribing safety with patients, highlighting the risks associated with scheduled drugs.

Lead author of the study, Jason Doctor, who is also the co-director of the Behavioral Sciences Program at the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics, stated that providing physicians with a simple plan helps to temper their use of these drugs. He sees this approach as a promising and scalable solution to reducing fatal drug overdoses.

This study builds upon previous research conducted by Doctor and his colleagues. The first study found that physicians reduced opioid prescriptions by 10% in the three months following notification of a fatal overdose, while the second study showed a reduction of 7% one year after receiving a notification. These previous studies served as the control for this latest study.

The findings of this study highlight the importance of better understanding how to enact behavior change among physicians whose patients have experienced negative consequences from medical care. Doctor believes that this evolution in understanding is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

The study involved sending letters to 541 clinicians in Los Angeles County, with 284 receiving a standard letter notifying them of a patient’s fatal overdose, and 257 receiving a letter with additional guidance. The results clearly demonstrate the impact of providing physicians with a plan to follow when dealing with patients in pain.

The implementation of effective planning prompts serves as a proactive step in minimizing the risks associated with prescription drug abuse. By equipping physicians with clear guidance, they are better equipped to make informed decisions when prescribing controlled substances. As a result, patient safety is enhanced, and the potential for fatal drug overdoses is significantly reduced.

Moving forward, it is crucial for healthcare providers to adopt strategies that prioritize the well-being of patients and improve prescribing practices. By focusing on providing physicians with comprehensive plans to manage patient pain, healthcare systems can play a vital role in reducing the devastating impact of prescription drug overdoses.
