Ensuring Adequate Sleep for Migrant Roofers: A Matter of Life and Death

Ensuring Adequate Sleep for Migrant Roofers: A Matter of Life and Death

Posted on January 15, 2024January 15, 2024 by Anuja Desai

Migrant roofers in the United States face significant challenges related to their sleep quality, which can have life-threatening consequences, according to recent research conducted by Rice University. These individuals assist in the reconstruction of communities affected by natural disasters, where a lack of sleep can result in fatal accidents or severe injuries.

The findings were published in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior on January 9th as part of a comprehensive study exploring the influence of various factors, including housing, employment, and legal status, on the lives of migrant workers who travel to and within the United States to support post-disaster rebuilding efforts. The frequency and severity of natural disasters have increased significantly due to concerns associated with climate change, resulting in an overwhelming demand for the services of these migrant workers.

Lead researcher Sergio Chávez, an associate professor of sociology, emphasizes that it takes months, or even years, for communities to rebuild after such catastrophes. Given the high demand for migrant workers in these situations, the study aimed to investigate their living and working conditions more closely.

The study specifically examines how employment and housing affect the sleep quality of migrant roofers involved in the restoration of disaster-affected communities. By means of targeted surveys and in-depth interviews, Chávez and co-author Jing Li, an adjunct associate professor of sociology, sought to understand the impact of job instability and substandard, irregular housing on the workers’ sleep patterns.

Considering that many migrant workers are undocumented and avoid Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the researchers also explored how their legal status, or lack thereof, influenced their sleep quality. The research reveals that temporary dwellers, as opposed to individuals residing in permanent housing, were more likely to experience restless sleep and sleep-related issues. Roofers who worked fewer days per month or encountered stress due to a lack of work were also prone to sleep problems.

Undocumented workers, compared to their documented counterparts, were more likely to report shorter sleep duration, restless sleep, and general sleep problems. Some respondents explicitly stated that the absence of legal authorization to work caused significant stress. Fear of being targeted by authorities resulting in deportation and separation from loved ones troubled those with family in the United States. Additionally, workers without legal status, who had partners and children abroad, mentioned the stress and sleep disturbances caused by not being able to see their families for extended periods of time.

Li highlights the importance of sleep as a critical component of overall health and a relatively underexplored health behavior. Previous research has linked poor sleep to increased risks of obesity, anxiety, depression, and other negative health conditions.

Moreover, Chávez notes that the lack of sleep exacerbates the already perilous nature of the work performed by these migrant roofers on a daily basis. The researchers plan to conduct further investigations into various aspects of the work and life experiences of these individuals.

To ensure the safety and well-being of migrant roofers, it is crucial to address the factors contributing to their poor sleep quality. This includes incorporating strategies to provide stable housing and employment, as well as addressing the legal and social challenges faced by these workers. By prioritizing their sleep health, we can not only improve the quality of their lives but also mitigate the potential risks posed by sleep deprivation in this inherently dangerous line of work.
