The Rise and Fall of Twitter: The Emergence of X and Threads in the Year of Social Media Soul-Searching

Posted on December 28, 2023December 28, 2023 by Anuja Desai

In the year 2023, social media underwent significant transformations, with both new beginnings and closures. One of the major developments was the demise of Twitter and the rise of a new platform called X, which was spearheaded by Elon Musk. The transition was marked by the replacement of Twitter’s iconic blue bird logo with the X logo.

However, X’s reign has been tumultuous. The platform has faced numerous allegations of misinformation, racism, and declining usage. Musk’s controversial remarks and decisions, such as restoring the account of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, have further fueled criticism and concerns about the platform’s safety. LGBTQ and marginalized communities have particularly voiced their concerns about X becoming a less inclusive space.

Amidst this identity crisis, users began searching for alternatives. One such contender was Mastodon, while another was Bluesky, a project initiated by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, also joined the competition with its own platform called Threads. Despite its initial popularity, Threads faced challenges in retaining users.

The year also witnessed a reckoning regarding the impact of social media on children’s mental health. The U.S. surgeon general issued a warning about the lack of evidence supporting social media’s safety for children and called for immediate action to protect them. In response, several U.S. states filed lawsuits against Meta, accusing the company of contributing to the youth mental health crisis.

Arturo Béjar, a former engineering director at Meta, testified before a Senate subcommittee about the harmful effects of social media on teen mental health. This testimony coincided with bipartisan efforts in Congress to pass regulations aimed at protecting children online.

In the realm of artificial intelligence (AI), social media platforms began integrating AI into various aspects of their operations. AI was used to drive user engagement, ad performance, subscription sign-ups, and e-commerce activity. However, the implementation of AI faced challenges, as both consumers and regulators scrutinized its use. Subscriptions also emerged as a lucrative revenue stream for platforms in the wake of declining social ad businesses.

As major elections approached in countries like the U.S. and India, the role of AI and social media in spreading misinformation remained a key concern. The audio and video capabilities of AI, when combined with widespread distribution on social platforms, posed a significant risk in terms of misinformation dissemination.

In summary, 2023 was a year of significant changes and introspection for social media. The demise of Twitter and the emergence of X and Threads marked a new era, but these platforms faced criticism and challenges. The impact on children’s mental health and the integration of AI were also hot topics. As social media continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how it will address these concerns and shape the future of online communication.
