Researchers Introduce a New Web 3.0 Streaming Architecture and Marketplace

Posted on January 25, 2024 by Anuja Desai

Incheon National University’s Assistant Professor, Gi Seok Park, and his team of researchers have introduced a groundbreaking system architecture designed specifically for Web 3.0 streaming services. The team addressed the technical challenges faced in implementing Web 3.0 media streaming, such as user experience degradation and compatibility issues with operating software and browsers.

Their research, recently published in the IEEE Transactions on Services Computing journal, proposes an end-to-end system architecture that utilizes the Inter-Planetary file system (IPFS), a type of Web 3.0 peer-to-peer (P2P) data storage technology. By leveraging IPFS, the researchers aimed to reduce service delays and enhance user experience.

Previous attempts to implement Web 3.0 services utilized third-party service providers using IPFS pinning services. However, these implementations came with performance limitations. To overcome this challenge, the researchers designed a system that allowed them to have full control over blockchain nodes by deploying their own IPFS nodes within their system.

In addition, the team implemented new protocols that incorporated content caching and chunk scheduling on their IPFS nodes. This enabled the nodes to collaborate with each other and efficiently download data. The researchers confirmed that their proposed system was compatible with IPFS nodes and operated seamlessly on IPFS P2P networks.

Furthermore, the team developed Retriever, a media non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace using Web 3.0 technologies. This marketplace allows users to watch video content while ensuring data privacy. It is also compatible with multiple mobile devices.

“With our service, creators can monetize their video content and even sell it as each content will be managed as an NFT. This process guarantees fairness and transparency,” explains Dr. Park.

The proposed service aims to establish digital trust among users, eliminating the need for web services to force trust upon users in the future. With the incorporation of smart contracts and transparent blockchain ledgers, all transactions will be conducted fairly and recorded securely.

The introduction of this Web 3.0 streaming architecture and marketplace presents exciting opportunities for content creators to monetize and distribute their video content. The utilization of IPFS and the integration of NFTs contribute to a fair and transparent ecosystem. With the increasing demand for decentralized and trustless systems, Web 3.0 is shaping the future of the internet paradigm.
